Source removal is the only method that means anything. The system goes under negative pressure with a large vacuum connected to the trunk, and stays there for the whole job, so everything dislodged from every run leaves the building rather than being redistributed through it.
The agitation is the part that does the work. Brushes or air whips through each run to the register, physically dislodging what is stuck to the duct wall. Suction alone at a register pulls the loose dust out of the first few feet and nothing else.
Flexible duct and duct board need different tools from sheet metal. A rotating steel brush that is right for a metal trunk will tear a flex liner, and a torn liner sheds into the airstream for the rest of its life.
We photograph inside the trunk before and after, in the same places. Duct cleaning is uniquely easy to fake — nobody can see inside their own system — so the evidence is the deliverable as much as the clean is.
